Suhy wins award, $500 grant
By Jim Kilpatrick, Staff Writer
Coppell resident Thom Suhy, principal of St. Mary of Carmel Catholic School, received a Work of Heart Award and was given a $500 grant for personal use as a thank you for his hard work and dedication to serving students, colleagues, families and their communities.
The award is presented annual by the Catholic Foundation.
“It is a true honor, although I am a bit embarrassed by it. There are so many good teachers and administrators that truly deserve this award,” Suhy said. “I feel blessed, but I am only as good as my staff and faculty.”
“That makes the award very special to me because it voted on by those that know what you are working to accomplish,” Suhy said.
His award coincides with a week-long celebration commemorating schools’ achievements.
The $500 award went to his wife Kimberly on her birthday.
“I used it on my wife’s 40th birthday, because of all the time I spend here (at the school) I wanted to do something special for her,” Suhy said. “This award was not just for me, it was for her and my kids. They sacrifice as well.”
Suhy has two sons, Dylan, 13, and Camden, 10.
Suhy spends long hours at the school away from his family.
“Trying to rebuild an inner-city school, and make it work I spend many long hours here,” Suhy said.
There were 27 awards presented to area teachers and staff for their service and dedication to the Catholic community by the foundation.
“Catholic Schools Week is dedicated to celebrating those who make a difference in our communities across the nation by recognizing the invaluable service and contributions teachers make to our schools,” said Edwin Schaffler, president of the Catholic Foundation. “The Catholic Foundation would like to take this time to thank and recognize those in our immediate Dallas area with Work of Heart Awards for going above and beyond what is expected of them.”
The Work of Heart Award program was established in 2005 and funded solely by an anonymous Dallas family through the Catholic Foundation. To this day the program has given 528 grants totaling $463,000 to educators and staff of Catholic lower, middle and high schools located in the Dallas area. This year, The Catholic Foundation has matched the family’s contribution to the program.
The nominations are judged based on traditional merit criteria including tenure and leadership, acts of kindness or charity, Christian example, mentoring and simply going the extra mile for an individual student, family or the community.
