Four residents file for special trustee election
By Senitra Horbrook, shorbrook@acnpapers.com
Four residents have filed to run in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD’s Nov. 3 special trustee election for Place 4. The candidates are Bob Mora, Susan Scott and Jerry Pippin, all of Carrollton, and Tom Bohmier of Farmers Branch. Election information can be found online at cfbisd.edu/election.
The Carrollton Leader asked each candidate about their background and views and will run their answers in two parts. This week will focus on their background; next week the candidates will discuss the district’s top issues and how they will work to influence them.
What motivated you to run for Place 4?
Mora: I was very blessed in 1984 to be selected as the first Hispanic to be a member of the Leadership Team of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and continued in that capacity until 1996. The district challenged me to continue the tradition of excellent student achievement and my record will indicate that I was successful. Now that I have retired, I feel that I should return to the Carrollton-Farmers Branch family to give of my time and talent to serve in a different capacity as school board trustee. The district is now challenged to continue providing an excellent academic program with less financial support from the state. The additional challenge of shifting demographics will require the new school board trustee to “roll up the sleeves” and find solutions. I come prepared to meet that challenge and will work tirelessly, along with other board members, for the students of the C-FB ISD.
Pippin: I feel it is an important civic duty, especially for someone who has a career background in the field of education working with kids.
Scott: I have been active in our school district for nine years, volunteering in the schools, working with administrators, and advocating for state and federal legislative mandates that will enhance learning in our schools. With the timing of this election, I believe that I am prepared through knowledge, direct experience, and understanding of the education system to be of value to our school board.
What in your background makes you qualified for the position?
Bohmier: My business and marketing background brings the ability to understand the perspectives of a diverse community and communicate effectively with them. The fact that I have three kids in the schools, one of which who recently graduated, provides a "front-line" perspective of the changes within our schools. Additionally, my mother has been a school board trustee, until recently, and we continue to have long and deep discussions about the challenges facing the education system.
Mora: I am a retired school administrator of 25 years with experience as a teacher, assistant principal, and district level coordinator of mathematics and instructional technology. Twelve of those years were spent in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, where I was responsible for developing and managing multi-million dollar budgets.
I also have 12 years of business experience as an educational consultant with a major textbook publishing company. My position allowed me to call on teachers, supervisors, assistant superintendents and superintendents throughout the United States where I would discuss the benefits of our instructional programs. Consequently, I am familiar with Texas Education Agency regulations as well as those of many other states.
Pippin: I have 31 years in education with a career background as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and superintendent, and I feel that experience gives me an understanding of all aspects of the educational process. I have a master’s degree in school administration with 27 hours of accounting and business. I am now a business owner in Carrollton and a patron in the community, so I believe that as a trustee, I offer an understanding of school administration and can offer community input and leadership for the district.
Scott: I have three main attributes that qualify me for the school board:
I have managerial experience including profit and loss responsibility of a $10 million sales budget for a staffing company. My understanding of finances and bottom line expectations is relevant to our school district financial issues.
My experience as a volunteer and active parent within our district has provided me with a great deal of knowledge about our education system and school district. Texas PTA and Local PTAs have been tremendous resources regarding school funding, TAKS rankings, role of Texas Education Agency, and much more. I have been a committed volunteer and student of the education system for the past nine years.
I have a BBA from University of North Texas specializing in Human Resources. My education prepared me for understanding equal employment policies, training, and industrial relations.
