Horn was coming off one of its best performances of the year in a 24-point trouncing of rival DeSoto on Friday.
The Jaguars came out with that same intensity in an overwhelming first quarter and they never looked back in a 73-29 victory over Mesquite.
The Jaguars opened the game on a 23-3 run to take instant control. Horn led 35-15 at halftime and started the second half on a similar run, outscoring Mesquite 18-3 to put the game away.
There was no shortage of contributors for the Jaguars, led by Breanna Hall’s 20-point effort. Brittany King scored 19 points, while Kelsi Baker and Nelsha Peterson added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Mesquite got 16 points from Eboney Roy and nine from China Pippin but the rest of the team combined for just four points.
North Mesquite remained winless in district play with a 40-30 loss to Tyler Lee on Tuesday. The Stallions trailed by five after one quarter but stayed within striking distance throughout. However, a 13-7 Tyler Lee run to end the game ended North Mesquite’s hopes of picking up its first win.
Iseoma Egboh scored 20 points to shoulder the load for the Stallion offense.
While Horn and DeSoto have all but wrapped up playoff spots, there is plenty of drama around the final two berths.
Tyler John Tyler is currently in third place with a 3-3 record, but faces a big week with a game against Mesquite on Friday and a clash with Horn on Tuesday.
The Skeeters can make a serious playoff push during the next few days. With wins over Tyler John Tyler on Friday and Tyler Lee on Tuesday, Mesquite can solidify its spot in the playoff race.
North Mesquite needs wins to get back into contention, but this will be the toughest week to do so against Horn and DeSoto.
FRIDAY: Horn crushes DeSoto to take over first place
Horn and DeSoto were about as even as they could be last season. Fittingly, the teams split the regular season series and shared the 11-5A championship.
On Friday, the Jaguars sent a message that the Eagles better elevate their game if they want to experience a similar result.
Horn shook off a slow start and dominated during the final three quarters to run away for a 64-40 victory in a clash of state-ranked teams.
As the district season hits its midpoint, the Jaguars move into sole possession of first place with a perfect 5-0 record, one game better than DeSoto.
Horn actually trailed by four after one quarter before going on a 21-7 run to take a 34-24 halftime lead.
The Eagles hung around for a while in the second half before the Jaguars outscored them 13-3 down the stretch to put the game away.
Brittany King had a game-high 21 points to lead Horn. Breanna Hall had 14 points, with Kelsi Baker and Nelsha Peterson also in double figures with 12.
Across town, Mesquite picked up a needed victory with a 43-21 triumph over North Mesquite.
The Skeeters took advantage of the Stallions’ recent offensive woes, holding them to seven points or fewer in every quarter.
Mesquite allowed only two points in the opening period in jumping to the lead and had a 17-8 advantage at halftime. The Skeeters then used a 15-6 run in the third quarter to put the game away.
Eboney Roy had 15 points and Krioni Bruce added 12 for Mesquite. Brittany Jenkins scored nine points and Iseoma Egboh had six for North Mesquite but no other player tallied more than two.
