Mesquite found itself in an unfamiliar spot on Tuesday as it saw itself at the bottom of the 11-5A standings.
There is still room to climb, but the Skeeters did get back on the winning track with a 43-36 victory over Horn.
Like last Friday’s loss to the Stallions, the Skeeters got off to a slow start and trailed by three.
Mesquite was able to claw back to a 16-16 tie by halftime and then took control in the third quarter with a 14-3 run to open a big lead. The Jaguars chipped away in the fourth quarter, but the Skeeters were able to hold on.
Jacoby Iglehart scored 12 points to lead Mesquite, with Derrick Jefferson adding nine. Andre Nwose had 10 points for Horn, with JaCorey Shepherd and Djavar Chatman adding nine and eight points, respectively.
North Mesquite was unable to build on its first district win as it dropped a tough 58-56 decision on the road at Tyler Lee.
The Stallions fell behind in the first quarter and while they stayed within striking distance throughout, they were unable to ever get over the hump.
Blake Nulisch had a nice game for North Mesqutie with 19 points, with Darik Walker also in double figures with 14.
Heading into the midway point of the 11-5A season, DeSoto is out in the lead after Tuesday’s demolition of Tyler John Tyler. The Eagles are 4-0 and have a one-game lead over the Lions (3-1).
Mesquite is in sole possession of third place at 2-2, with the remaining teams a game back at 1-3.
The congested standings make each game important during the season’s final three weeks.
The Skeeters can move back into a tie for second place on Friday when they face Tyler John Tyler. Horn and North Mesquite also square off on Friday with the winner getting a leg up on the playoff race going into the second half of district play.
FRIDAY: North Mesquite stuns Skeeters
Mesquite has enjoyed plenty of success in recent years. A big reason for that has been its ability to take care of its cross-town rivals.
North Mesquite has been a victim of that for much of that time but was able to gain a measure of revenge on Friday.
North Mesquite put on a strong performance in the first half and then held off a late charge to claim a 60-57 victory over the Skeeters. Not only did the Stallions pick up their first district win, they moved into a tie for third place at 1-2 with both Mesquite and Horn.
North Mesquite took a page out of the Skeeters’ book early in the game with a stifling defense that held Mesquite to six points in the first quarter. By halftime, the Stallions were out to a 25-16 lead.
The Skeeters got the offense going in the third quarter, scoring more in that period than they had in the entire first half to close the gap to two. But North Mesquite was able to regain the momentum in the fourth and hold on for the win.
Darik Walker had a team-high 17 points for the Stallions with Blake Nulisch and Theodis Barnes adding 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Mesquite was paced by Derrick Jefferson’s 18 points. Ty Belt and Jacoby Iglehart each scored nine for the Skeeters.
Horn had a tough time against state-ranked DeSoto in a 54-43 loss. The Jaguars fell into a 33-20 hole by halftime, and although they outscored the Eagles in the second half, were unable to make a serious push.
Mark Bradshaw had 15 points and David Harris chipped in with 10 to lead Horn.
The Jaguars and Skeeters will meet on Tuesday in a big game, with the winner getting a leg up in the playoff race. North Mesquite also has a big game as it tries to build on its momentum against Tyler Lee, which is the only 11-5A team without a district win.
DeSoto and Tyler John Tyler will meet on Tuesday with sole possession of first place on the line.
