Mesquite ISD teams compete at Skeeter Cup Challenge.
By DEVIN HASSON/Staff Writer
It was a busy weekend for Mesquite ISD soccer teams as all five squads competed at the Mesquite Skeeter Cup Challenge.
Host Mesquite split a pair of games on Saturday to finish the event with a 2-2-3 record.
The Skeeters used a goal by Jose Salas to post a 1-0 victory over West Mesquite. Mesquite then dropped a 3-1 decision to Corsicana, despite a score from Anthony Manning.
Mesquite opened the tournament by using a goal from Robert Rodriguez in a 1-0 win over Molina and battling Poteet to a scoreless tie.
Like the Skeeters, North Mesquite split a pair of games on the final day of the tournament, picking up a 4-1 win over Arlington Seguin, but falling to Skyline, 6-0.
The Stallions had a tougher go of things on Friday, losing a pair of close games to Garland (1-0) and Skyline (2-1).
On Thursday, North Mesquite got goals from Tyler Ledbetter and Carlos Cruz in a 2-2 tie against Poteet. The Stallions also posted scoreless draws against both Molina and Woodrow Wilson.
Horn finally got its offense untracked on the final day of the tournament. After scoring just one goal in four games on the first two days, the Jaguars posted a 3-2 victory over Poteet and battled Molina to a 3-3 tie.
Horn had dropped a pair of 2-0 decisions on Friday to Plano and Richardson. The Jaguars opened the tournament with a 1-1 tie against Arlington Seguin and a 1-0 loss to West Mesquite.
Poteet also closed the tournament on a high note with a 6-0 blasting of Seagoville on Saturday.
The Pirates also had trouble scoring earlier in the event with scoreless draws against both Richardson and Plano on Friday, and getting the same 0-0 results on Thursday against Mesquite and Ennis.
West Mesquite finished the tournament with a 3-3 record after dropping the 1-0 decision to Mesquite on Saturday.
The previous day, the Wranglers got goals from Jorge Artega and Mitchell Gonzalez in a 2-1 victory over Garland. That would be the lone offense of the day for West Mesquite, which fell to both Longview (3-0) and Skyline (2-0).
