Redhawks place sixth at district golf tournament

Published: Thursday, April 8, 2010 9:29 PM CDT
As his players made the turn Tuesday, McKinney High boys golf coach Chris Rednour was there to greet them with refreshments and some sage advice. With winds gusting at 40 miles-per-hour, turning straight shots into fades and draws, scores inflated rapidly on the second day of the District 9-4A Championships at Robson Ranch in Denton. Mistake-free rounds out of the equation, Rednour directed his guys to simply beat their playing partners. They heeded his instruction.

The Lions held off hard-charging Centennial down the stretch to pull away by seven strokes to take the title, their first since 2006. The Titans, who landed four players in the top 10, were forced to settle for second. Nevertheless, they secured a regional bid for the fifth year in a row.

“I’m five for five,” CHS head coach Lisa Sadler said. “It helps when you have talent. It makes me look good.”

Sadler and Centennial weren’t the only ones that looked good. Wakeland senior Jack Lempke threatened for the overall district title before placing third, while Frisco’s Nick Holditch collected the other at-large spot by finishing fourth.

The Raccoons, the 2009 district champs who entered the tournament with a No. 9 state ranking, struggled mightily on the opening day despite easier pin placements. They were 36 strokes behind McKinney entering the clubhouse after Day 1 and were only able to surge into fourth place Tuesday after shedding nine total strokes.

“It was a lot of different things,” Frisco head coach Mary Black said of her team’s struggles. “We weren’t quite with it.”

After firing an eight-over par 80 in the opening round, Holditch rallied with a 73 in the final round, the best second-day score in the tournament.

“He knew what he had to do and he did it today,” Black said. “He had the don’t-have-anything-to-lose type attitude.”

Playing in the final pairing with eventual overall champion Alex Nelson of McKinney, Lempke, a regional qualifier as a freshman, hung tough and had a shot at the title heading into the final hole. But he wound up double-bogeying the 18th after a one-foot putt slipped past the cup and rolled off the green.

The costly misstep forced Lempke to settle for the bronze, two strokes back of Nelson after rounds of 73 and 78. Wakeland coach Casey Wohlers said it was a disappointing finish to an otherwise great tournament for Lempke.

“He’s very confident in his game. He likes when the conditions are worse; it gets into other kids’ heads, where I don’t think it bothers Jack that much,” she said. “He’s so strong, his ball really cuts through a lot of it.”

Wakeland placed third overall, 22 strokes behind Centennial. Four Titans cracked 160, led by junior Sarosh Adi in fifth (73-80-153). Seniors Kyle Doherty and Sean Speed and junior Bobby Whitecotton also earned all-district honors by markedly improving their scores from the 2009 district tournament.

Adi, Speed and Tim Kosters, who took 13th, will be competing at regionals for the third year in a row.

“Winning district would have been great, but runner-up still gives you a chance to get to state,” Sadler said. “We’re looking at the big picture. We were completely happy with that.”

The extreme winds that persisted throughout Tuesday’s round forced players to make major adjustments. Many abandoned the driver in favor of an iron off the tee, and low punches onto the green replaced soaring flop shots.

“The conditions were just so challenging. It was brutal,” McKinney head coach Chris Rednour said. “Mostly you just have to grind it out. You have to accept bogeys.”

Like Centennial, McKinney landed four players in the top 10. Nelson topped teammate Steven Lauterbach by one stroke for the individual crown, while Jeff Walker and Nick Robert placed eighth and ninth.

The Lions shot 290 on Monday but that score was bumped up 28 strokes just 24 hours later in the face of the windy conditions.

“That tells you how hard Day 2 was,” Sadler said. “Putts were moving all over the place. It was the windiest I’ve ever seen it at Robson.”
