Hotel wins award

Holiday Inn Express, Dallas-Lewisville hotel received the InterContinental Hotels Group 2010 Quality Excellence Award, given to hotels achieving distinction in all aspects of their operations. IHG is the world’s largest hotel group by number of rooms.

The Holiday Inn Express, Dallas-Lewisville is one of 96 properties selected from the company’s more than 4,400 hotels in recognition of overall quality excellence. The hotel was recognized during the 2010 IHG Americas Investors & Leadership Conference in Las Vegas, Oct. 25 – 27.

More than 3,500 franchise owners, operators and company officials attended the 2010 IHG Americas Investors & Leadership Conference.

Football team looking for players

City announces lane closures

Lewisville’s street division has contracted with Ken-Do Contracting, LP to perform street and sidewalk repairs on Edmonds Lane between FM 3040 and State Highway 121. Work was scheduled to begin on Monday, Nov. 1, and be completed by Friday, Dec. 3, weather permitting.

Due to the use of heavy equipment, please use caution when transiting the area. Drivers should expect lane closures.

Lewisville’s street division has contracted with Ken-Do Contracting, LP to perform street and sidewalk repairs on Beechwood Drive and Beechwood Place. Work was scheduled to begin on Monday, Nov. 1 and be completed by Friday, Nov. 20, weather permitting.

No parking in the street will be permitted in the immediate work zone.

Due to the use of heavy equipment, please use caution when transiting the area. Drivers should expect lane closures.

Fundraiser scheduled

Interskate Roller Rink, 1408 S State Highway 121, will host a fundraiser from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 6. The entry fee is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. The purpose is to help Bob and Julie Mendonsa raise money to build an orphanage in Kenya. Bob Mendonsa was a doctor at Orthopedic Associates in Lewisville until his family moved to Kenya in 2008 to work at CURE International Hospital. Seeing a great need, he and his wife founded Naomi’s Village Orphanage. They are building this orphanage from the ground up and need help in order to open the doors to the children that so desperately need a home.

Ann’s Haven to host memorial service

Ann’s Haven Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) will host a memorial service to honor the memory of loved ones on from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 7. The memorial service will be held in the Cole Chapel of the First United Methodist Church, 201 S. Locust Street in Denton.

The event is open to the public and will feature special music, readings, and the lighting of memorial candles. A reception will follow the service, hosted by the Ann’s Haven V.N.A. auxiliary. Attendees of all faiths are welcome.

Counselor to speak at Ann’s Haven

Larry Barber, a licensed professional counselor and director of CounselingWorks, GriefWorks and KidWorks, will speak on “Dealing With the Stresses of Loss” at the Nov. 9 hospice family luncheon hosted by Ann’s Haven VNA.

The luncheon is from noon to 1 p.m. at the Denton Elks Lodge on 228 East Oak Street. There is no cost to attend the luncheon, but reservations are requested and can be made by calling Molly Harrison, Ann’s Haven VNA bereavement coordinator, at 940-349-5900.

Cards for a Cause night scheduled

Rent-A-Center is hosting a Texas Hold’em tournament benefiting Alport Syndrome Hope for the Cure Foundation from 8 p.m. to midnight, Friday, Nov. 12, at the Golf Club of Castle Hills to help raise awareness and funding for research of the treatment and cure of Alport Syndrome.

Although Alport Syndrome is a rare disease causing progressive kidney damage in both genders, damage is greater in males and will eventually lead to kidney failure. These boys will require dialysis throughout their childhood and a kidney transplant during their teen years.

Supporting sponsorships include Capital Title, American Legend Homes, Buchanan Technologies, Automated Circuit Design and American Airlines Center. Generous sponsorship will be honored by displaying company logos and information at the tournament tables. Other event highlights include prizes such as a 73 inch flat-screen DLP TV, a suite to a 2011 Texas Rangers game, four tickets to a Dallas Cowboy’s game and a professional bass fishing trip for five on Lake Texoma.

LLELA offers introduction to fly fishing class

Dallas Fly Fishers will hold an introductory fly fishing course at the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. Participants will learn the basics of fly fishing in preparation for a fishing day, which will be scheduled at a later date with those who are interested.

Participants will need: warm clothing, eye protection (glasses), a hat, sun protection, a lunch and drinking water. All other equipment is provided. There is no charge for the class. There is a $5 per person admission fee to enter LLELA. The class is open to anyone age 11 years and up.

The skills taught will satisfy the requirements for the Boy Scouts of America fly fishing merit Badge, and all participants will receive the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Basic Fly Fishing Certificate.

VAL hosts show

The Visual Arts League will host a new show now through Nov. 13, with guest artist Robert Moore. He will have installations, paintings on Redwood and performance art. The Members’ show, “Bite Size” will include small artworks.

VAL members exhibiting at Tierney's Café & Tavern, 208 East Main Street, for the month November are Arthur Graye, Lorraine Hayes and Mary Infante.

Lewisville Public Library schedules programs for adults

The Lewisville Public Library, 1197 W. Main Street, will offer classes and activities during November for adults.

·Coupon Swap -- Exchange current coupons and discounts with fellow smart shoppers from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6. Swap one non-expired coupon with another non-expired coupon.

·Cool Tools @ Your Library –Interested in learning more about a current hot topic? Come to a cool tools mini class to learn how to access and use Points of View Reference Center. The database offers an overview of over 250 current issues with point and counterpoint information and critical thinking guides. Classes are held from 2-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 and 7-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Library computer lab. The Lewisville Public Library provides free 24/7 access to Points of View Reference Center.

·Computer Classes – Free computer training classes on Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel will be held in November to introduce students to word processing and spreadsheets. The Word class will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, and the Excel class is from 2-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. Classes are held at the library computer lab. Registration is required by calling 972-219-3779.

Free electronics collection to be held in November

The city of Lewisville and the city of Highland Village will host a Texas Recycles Day Electronics Collection from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 20. There will be no fee or residency check. Goodwill Industries of Dallas will work the event.

The Lewisville drop-off location is at the Residential Convenience Center, 330 W. Jones Street. A donation attendant will be on duty and will have Goodwill receipts available. The Highland Village location will be at city hall, 1000 Highland Village Road.

Accepted items of any brand or condition include: computers, monitors, printers, scanners, servers and racks, hard drives, keyboards, computer mouses, speakers, cords, cables, ink and toner, software, gaming systems, webcams, cell phones and PDAs. No televisions will be accepted.

Support group sets meetings

“Women of Hope,” an educational support group will host its support session from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Episcopal Church of Annunciation, 602 N. Old Orchard Lane. The second session is titled “Understanding cancer treatment.” The group is open to women only, those struggling with any type of cancer, cancer survivors or caretakers. The group will meet for 10 sessions the third Saturday of every month.

Lewisville Public Library schedules programs for teens

The Lewisville Public Library, 1197 W. Main Street, will offer classes and activities during November for teens.

·Crafternoon for Tweens – Sixth through eighth graders can sign up for the craft program, held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3. Sign up at the youth services desk or call 972-219-3577.

·Teen Role Playing Sessions -- Take a lead, outwit cunning villains, solve puzzles and unravel mysteries during Teen Role Playing Sessions Monday nights. Teens will role play Warlords of Aros on Nov. 15 and Rhül: Conquest of the New World Nov. 8 and 22. All role playing sessions are from 6–8:30 p.m. in teen point (second floor of the library). Teens ages 12-18 years old are welcome.

Streets re-asphalt work scheduled

Lewisville’s street division has contracted with Reynolds Asphalt and Construction Company to re-asphalt Edgewood, Centennial and Price Drive. Construction is scheduled to begin Thursday, Nov. 4 and be completed Friday, Dec.10, weather permitting.

The city is requesting all vehicles be removed from the street between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday due to the use of heavy equipment.

Vehicles not removed from the street during the hours of construction are subject to being towed at the owner’s expense.

Cashless toll construction continues

The North Texas Tollway Authority began construction on the Dallas North Tollway to convert existing toll collection facilities to cashless toll collection, also known as all-electronic toll collection on June 21. The construction will lead up to the conversion of the DNT to all-ETC, which is set for the evening of Dec. 10 at which point all NTTA toll facilities will end the collection of cash tolls in the lanes. Instead, all motorists will either use their TollTags or receive ZipCash invoices to pay for tolls.

After the Dec. 10 conversion, crews will continue working for an additional six to seven months to remove the old plaza structures and replace the remaining ramp structures along the DNT. All construction activity associated with the conversion to all-electronic toll collection is expected to be completed by July 2011.

Chorale presents holiday show

The Lewisville Civic Chorale will present “Hollywood Holiday”: Songs from the movies. Also, sacred holiday hymns with audience participation. The shows begin at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 18 and at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19. Concerts are held at The Episcopal Church of the Annunciation, 602 N. Old Orchard Lane. A reception will follow both concerts.

Admission is $15 general admission; $10 seniors; $5 students and children. Discounted tickets are $30 for families of any size.

Lewisville to host Bassmaster Central Open in February

Bassmaster is set to return to Lewisville Lake, kicking off its 2011 season with a Bassmaster Central Open Feb. 24-26. This will be the fifth Bassmaster event held at Lewisville Lake, starting with a Bassmaster Elite 50 event in June 2005 and followed by three Women’s Bassmaster Tour events, including the inaugural WBT event in October 2005. Lewisville Lake also is the annual home to the National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship and the Big Bass Tour North Texas Classic.

The Lewisville event, hosted by the Lewisville Convention and Visitors Bureau, will be based at Lewisville Lake Park. The final weigh-in on Feb. 26 will be held at Bass Pro Shops in Grapevine. Bass Pro is the series title sponsor. Anglers can register for the event on-line at Bassmaster.com starting Nov. 30. The full 2011 series schedule is available at www.Bassmaster.com.
