For more than a decade, cities across America have joined together in November to celebrate Recycle Day. Carrollton celebrated over the weekend by collecting various items that will go back to the community during Texas Recycles Day.
The event took place at Newman Smith High School, with the help of volunteers throughout the community, including high school students, Carrollton Evening Lions Club members and members of Keep Carrollton Beautiful.
“Our event was a big success,” said Diane Taheri, coordinator for Texas Recycles Day and member of Keep Carrollton Beautiful. “We had nearly 200 vehicles come and drop items off. All of the items that were collected are prevented from entering our landfill and some items will help those in need.”
Vendors included Firestone Complete Auto, Carrollton Evening Lions Club, Collin County Recycling, Carrollton Farmers Branch PTA, Goodwill Industries, Carrollton Community Garden, Knit Group and AAA Recycling.
Taheri said that the Carrollton Evening Lions Club collected more than 80 pieces of medical equipment including eye glasses, respirators and hearing aids valued at more than $12,000.
“The Lions Club will re-fit the glasses with new frames and will give them to kids. It is a great way to reuse the glasses for a good cause,” Diaz said.
In addition, Collin County Computers and Recycling collected nearly 400 pieces of computer equipment including more than a 100 printers and monitors.
Other items collected were clothing and shoes that go towards the C-FB PTA. Taheri said more than 1,000 pieces of clothing were collected. The clothing will go to the PTA clothes closet where teachers will have access to pull items for students in need of clothing or shoes.
“I know teachers who have bought clothes for students out of there own pocket,” Taheri said. “This will go to a good use in the school district.”
Taheri and Diaz agreed overall the event was a big success and are thankful for all those who came out and donated.
“I’d like to thank all those who participated, from our student volunteers to private citizens and board members of Keep Carrollton Beautiful who sponsor the event,” Taheri said. “None of this would have been possible without the willingness and patience of our vendors who withstood the cold wind to come to the aid of others. This was truly a collaborative event with a positive outcome for all.”
