McKINNEY -- A celebration of freedom was on full display this Fourth of July in McKinney during the city's annual "Red, White, and BOOM!" festival.
McKinney's celebration offered residents a full slate of holiday activities, including a chance to go to parades, dabble in downtown sales, attend numerous shows, and finish it all off with an exciting fireworks display.
"Red, White, and BOOM!" kicked off with the Hometown Parade on Monday morning in Downtown McKinney. An all-time high of 60 participants took part in this year's parade, a group that included veterans, Scout troops, nonprofit organizations and local businesses.
Later in the afternoon, McKinney's annual car show event had a chance to display some real horsepower. This year's show, put on by Mustang Sally Productions, hosted more than 100 classic, antique and modern cars. The show had music and games and awarded trophies to some of the top vehicles.
When night fell, the center of activity for the "Red, White, and BOOM!" celebrations moved to the McKinney Soccer Complex at Craig Ranch. The gates opened at 7 p.m., ushering a flood of people to the fields in anticipation of the event. Children played games and enjoyed the bounce house, while others listened to live music and waited for the fireworks show.
American Idol's Motown Review performed at the fields starting at 8 p.m. Former American Idol contestants Michael Sarver, David Hernandez, Alexis Grace and LaKisha Jones treated the crowd to some of Motown's greatest hits. The artists offered the crowd a great show that everyone could enjoy.
"I wanted to bring in artists that were fun and would commemorate the Fourth of July," David Taylor, McKinney Performing Arts Center Director, said. "It was a great compliment to the evening's festivities."
The day's events concluded with a fireworks show. Spectators watched as the night sky filled with beautiful shapes, colors and the loud chorus of the fireworks. The event's popularity drew people from all over, filling nearby parking lots and businesses with those hankering to get a taste of the night's spectacle.
"Such a big crowd -- not just where the event was, but also those watching from the streets," David Craig, master developer of Craig Ranch, said. "I thought it was head and shoulders above last year's festivities."
