Girls basketball: Playoffs still a possibility for Cowgirls
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, jthomas@acnpapers.com
While the postseason appears to be a longshot for Coppell's girls basketball team, first-year coach Nicole Collins continues to be impressed with the improvements her youthful team is making during District 7-5A competition.
That was on display during the past week, when the Cowgirls notched a win over Keller Fossil Ridge, 45-36, and showed an improved effort against state-ranked Carroll on Friday before falling, 53-25.
"We're getting better and better," Collins said. "The kids have really been buying into what the staff is trying to preach and have shown their commitment through hard work."
"That's what we keep telling the girls," Collins said. "If we finish out with three wins, we have a good chance of tying for fourth and maybe getting into the playoffs. But either way, I'm proud of the progress that we've made. A lot of times with a young team, that gets lost and is tough to tell, but we're improving and have done a great job of dealing with adversity."
Composure was a key in the win against Fossil Ridge.
"We actually had to deal with a fire alarm going off in the middle of the fourth quarter when we were up by 14 points," Collins said. "So we had to leave and then come back and regroup. Fossil Ridge got the lead down to eight or so, but the kids stepped up and made some plays to regain control. I was really pleased with maturity they showed."
Carina Zhao and Marina Muenster led the squad with 14 points apiece.
"Carina did a great job of not only scoring, but taking care of the ball and running the offense," Collins said. "And I was also pleased with our rebounding. They had a girl that got 20 rebounds against her, but we did a much better job this time. Our blocking out was awesome."
The team wasn't as fortunate against Carroll, however, as a 25-3 Lady Dragon advantage in the second quarter paved the way for a loss.
"We saw some good things," Collins said. "They're the No. 1 team in the district and are ranked in the state, and we played with them for three of the four quarters. We just let them get on a run and couldn't do anything to stop them."
Coppell continued at Justin Northwest Tuesday (results not available as of press time) and travels to Keller at the same time Friday.
