Mayor honors military man, hero

The Real.Texas.Festival. Took a brief pause in its entertaiment schedule on Saturday, April 28, to honor a heroic member of the military. Mesquite Mayor John Monaco presented the Key to the City to Staff Sgt. Allen Christopher Doggett.
Doggett was honored for his heroic actions on March 14. He was traveling on I-635 on his way to a recruiting mission when he heard a loud boom from the car in front of him. Doggett noticed there was fire coming from underneath the car. He immediately caught up to the car and started honking and screaming at the driver to pull over. Due to a language barrier, the driver of the vehicle did not immediately pull over. He persisted screaming and honking until the driver finally stopped to see what the problem was.
Doggett told the driver that the car was on fire and they needed to get out right away. The driver was trying to salvage some of his personal belongings from the vehicle until Doggett insisted he abandon the vehicle immediately.
A few other people eventually stopped to assist and they called police and began directed traffic around the burning car until emergency crews arrived.
He learned he would be receiving the award on Tuesday, April 24, when he receiving an email from his boss informing him that he would need to be at the festival at 5 p.m. in his dress uniform.
“When he told me I asked him why and he told me about the award,” Doggett said. “It makes me feel appreciated but I can saying 'why me?' 'what did I do?'. My wife and mother tell me I did a good thing that was not something a lot of people would have done.”
Doggett, a Longmont, CO, native, is currently assigned as a recruiter for 5th Brigade, Plano Company, Mesquite Recruiting Station.
“I like it here in Mesquite. It's a really good place with good people,” Doggett said.
Doggett enlisted in the military in 2005 as an infantryman. He completed his basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning in Georgia. When Doggett completed his training he was assigned to 2nd Battalion 5th Calvary and stationed at Fort Hood.
Doggett has served two tours in Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom, from 2006 to 2008 and 2009 to 2010. He is married to Brittanie and they have a 14 month old daughter, Preslie.
Being in Iraq helped build me as a person. It made me a better person, soldier and father. I am a lot more appreciative of things now,” Doggett said. “People tend to take everyday things for granted.”
