KRB looking for volunteers

One of Keep Rowlett Beautiful’s goals is to beautify the city. The organization hosts one of its signature cleanup events, the biannual waterways cleanup at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 28.
“This is all about volunteers coming together to clean up litter from designated areas such as parks and shorelines,” said Cheryl Harris, KRB secretary.
Keep Rowlett Beautiful invites any individual or group to come and help collect debris during the event. The organization has many groups already signed up including Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups, school clubs, church groups, corporate teams and families signed up.
She added that this year the organization has even had several kayakers sign up to assist with removing waste from the top of the water.
“This is the first year we have had kayakers. It really helps because they can remove paper from on top of the water. They will load it into their kayak and return it to shore to be collected. It may not be a lot but it is better than nothing,” Harris said. “We don’t want the kids in the water so this helps a lot.”
Harris said the event helps to make the city a better place to live by getting rid of some of the debris that gathers around the city.
“This event gets litter out of the environment. When it’s cleaner it’s safer in many ways. People also get used to it being clean and will tend to litter less,” Harris said.
The group has been doing the event for more than seven years and it is always successful.
“It’s hard to figure out how much we actually collect because all of it goes to different locations for collection. I would estimate we always collect at least one large dumpster full of trash, sometimes we probably collect two or three dumpsters full,” Harris said.
She said the event also serves as a learning experience and an opportunity for social interaction.
“The kids learn about littering early and will tell their parents not to litter. They also enjoy visiting with each other after and most don’t realize that the event didn’t take that long,” Harris said.
Keep Rowlett Beautiful provides a hot dog lunch to all who participate in the cleanup. Harris said they will begin firing up the grill early so that as groups make their way in from cleaning up their area, the hot dog will be ready for them to eat.
