ROWLETT - A police chase ended in a fiery accident and a death in Rowlett Monday morning.

A Garland police official said their officers were in pursuit of a 23-year-old male suspect when the suspect’s vehicle ran a red light and collided with another vehicle. The 52-year-old male driver of the second vehicle hit was killed in the crash.

Garland police have not released the names of the suspect or the victim.

At 4:40 a.m. a call to the Garland police was made in reference to a male suspect causing a disturbance in the 1700-block of Cumberland Road in Garland. Police officials said the suspect is the ex-boyfriend of the person who lives in the house where they found the suspect.

When the officer arrived and approached the vehicle the suspect was in, the suspect fled and temporarily dragged the officer along with the suspect's vehicle. Garland officials said the officer suffered minor injuries but was able to get into his vehicle and began pursuit of the suspect.

As the pursuing officer was catching up with the suspect on Miller Road the suspect came to the intersection of Miller and Rowlett Road where the suspect ran the red light and collided with another vehicle. This occurred near 5 a.m. Monday morning.

The victim of the second vehicle was killed at the scene. The suspect, whose vehicle had caught fire by the time the officer had arrived, was pulled from his vehicle and sent to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas with critical injuries.

The accident scene was closed for most of the morning as Garland traffic investigators looked over the scene.
