Nature center to host wildlife program

Ever notice a bobcat in your garage?

A presentation in Southlake next month will teach residents how to handle it.

The Bob Jones Nature Center and the Southlake Department of Public Safety will host the “Living with Wildlife” educational series from 1-3 p.m. March 10 at the center, 355 E. Bob Jones Road.

The event is the second of the nature center’s educational series. The first seminar provided information on feral hogs, such as how destructive they can be and what can be done to combat them.

The “Living with Wildlife” event aims to provide residents information about the history and behavior of wildlife. The series is taking place in light of recent residential and commercial development in the city that encroaches on wildlife’s habitat.

“All types of wildlife – skunks, possums, squirrels, coyotes and bobcats – are just some of the animals that have been pushed out because of development,” said Emily Galpin, director of the nature center. “They’re trying to survive, and that sometimes means getting into homes and garages. So this program will discuss which ones are more just pests and how to deal with them.”

This portion of the program will be conducted by Cpl. Thomas Keen and Officer Ronnie White.

White said some of the tips offered will include removing an animal from underneath a shed and fencing it off with chicken wire, not leaving food and water out and blocking off chimneys.

“The majority of the [animal] calls we get are wildlife related, not domestic animal related,” White said, adding that there haven’t been any reports of humans getting attacked by wildlife, though domestic animals sometimes fight with wild animals.

The second part of the program will feature Texas Metro Wildlife rehabbers showing attendees how to build their own squirrel box.

“The idea is that if the squirrel finds the box, it will live there and not in the attic,” Galpin said.

The cost for the event is $10 to cover the materials for the box.
