Little Elm ISD moves to 1:1 digital learning initiative for students
Staff Reports
The Little Elm ISD Board of School Trustees recently approved spending assigned fund balance to increase students' access to technology in the district. Next year, Little Elm High School students will be launching the district's first 1:1 technology initiative. More specifically, mid-way through the 2012-2013 school year, each student will be issued individual MacBook Air laptops for educational use.
"We believe this is a big step in preparing our students for the future. This levels the playing field for many of our students, and elevates our students to new levels of achievement," said School Board President Sally Coleman.
Eleven computer labs at the high school will become classrooms, freeing more space for student growth. And, those computers and other technology will be directed to the other campuses.
New funds will also be available for lower grade level teachers to apply for digital learning grants. Funds traditionally designated for annual upgrades at the high school campus will also be redistributed to the lower grade levels.
The next several months will be spent training teachers and staff on new ways to integrate the new tools into daily learning. Also, staff will be tasked with ordering, imaging and prepping the tools for the mid-year distribution to students.
"These are exciting times to be in education, and for many of our students this new initiative is going to set them on a new path. I would like to thank our Board for their support," Leuthard said.
Three years ago, all high school teachers in the district received MacBooks for their use, and all middle school teachers have used them for two years.
The district funded several Teacher Innovation Grants this current school year to explore different uses of technology and track progress in preparation for this initiative. The grants piloted a variety of technology tools including iPads, laptop carts, iTouches, flipped classrooms and students bringing their own devices.
