Biannual event aims to make city cleaner

Published: Monday, April 2, 2012 11:52 AM CDT
One of the goals of Keep Mesquite Beautiful is to help keep the city clear of clutter and debris. The group hosts its biannual trash bash event on Saturday, April 14.

“The main goal is to clean and beautify our city parks and other areas around the city that need trash picked up,” said Paige Swiney, executive director for Keep Mesquite Beautiful. ”We like to focus on the waterways and city parks and collect any trash that gathers out there such as food containers, bottles and cans.”

The event is part of the Great Texas Trash Off, the Trinity Trash Bash, and Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup.

Swiney said the event will begin at 9 a.m. at City lake Park Aquatic Center where volunteers will check in and be given their designated area to clean.

“We will hand them trash bags and gloves and give them a location to go clean,” Swiney said.

She added that all participants get a free lunch and the first 350 volunteers that signup will receive a trash bash T-shirt. The event usually garners approximately 450 volunteers, Swiney said. Last trash bash, volunteers collected 1.5 tons of trash.

“This event helps keep trash out of our waterways which is ultimately where trash goes,” Swiney said.

There will be a contest held for the weirdest piece of trash found. In past years there was one winner declared but this year the group will divide the contest by age group and present on winner for elementary and one for secondary age students. The contest will be judged after the group reassembles at the aquatic center for lunch at 11 a.m.

The trash bash is open to any civic group, youth group, school group or any adult that wants to participate.

“We encourage everyone to participate,” Swiney said. “This is among our most successful events.”

She added that the event usually turns out to be a lot more fun than people realize.

“It really is a lot of fun. You wouldn’t expect picking up trash with friends to be fun but the time goes quickly and the kids have lots of fun. Last year they were doing line dances after the event,” Swiney said.
