Student council offers girls chance at prom

High heels, bow ties and limos--prom is all the talk among high school students, and the Little Elm High School Student Council is giving girls a chance to attend.
The LEHS Student Council students hosted a prom dress drive last Saturday, accepting donated gently worn prom or special occasion dresses. The drive, which was started last year by former student Victoria Steen for her Girl Scout Gold Award project, helps girls who may not have the finances to attend prom by allowing them to pick out a donated prom dress at no charge.
"It's something me and [the council] wanted to keep going for the community," Senior Samantha Hackney, vice president of Student Council, said. "We just want to give them a chance to look as good as everyone else."
"The only challenge is trying to get it [drive] out there," Hackney said.
When donated, the dresses are sorted by sizes, color, cut and how long the straps are. Each dress is photographed to be put into a catalogue that girls can look through to help decide on a dress to try on.
"Sometimes people will donate their random, awkward ones, but we've got some pretty ones today," Senior Shelby Sutton, president of Student Council, said.
The council collected at least 40-50 dresses on Saturday, reaching close to their goal of 65 dresses. A pair of shoes and a matching purse to a dress was even donated. Last year, the council collected 45 dresses.
On March 31, the council will host the Dress Pickup Day for girls to come by, try on dresses and take one home. Hair and nail vendors will be available at the event as well. All the girls need to bring are themselves.
"We'll have some rooms to try them on at," Hackney said. "It's just like they are going shopping on a normal day."
Today is the last day dresses can be donated. The dresses must be gently worn or new to be donated. Currently, the council is in need of dresses in the middle sizes from size four to eight. The donor of each dress donated received an entry into a raffle to win a free pair of prom tickets.
Dresses can be taken to Dixie Turnbull's room or to the front office at the high school for non-students. The dresses will dry cleaned before being stored on racks based on size for the Dress Pickup Day.
Both Sutton and Hackney will be graduating this year, but they are confident that the drive will continue and according to Sutton, one day expand if there could be more community involvement.
"I think it's something we can take pride in and that people will continue [the drive]," Sutton said.
The drive is also something classes can take pride in as well.
"Each class leaves a legacy behind and [the new class] strives to leave a bigger one than before," Hackney said.
