Marcus' Langdon named Class 5A Tennis Coach of the Year

Marcus tennis coach Kelly Langdon was recently voted as the Texas Tennis Coaches Association's Class 5A Coach of the Year.
Langdon will be honored Friday at the Hall of Fame ceremony at John Newcombe's Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels and will take his place in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco as a winner.
Coaches must be nominated for the award, which is voted on by former recipients.
After receiving a nomination, coaches submit a bio that goes before the committee for the final vote.
Langdon said he was nominated last year and had to submit bio information. However, this season, the bio information was not requested.
"I was even more shocked because I was nominated and they didn't request the bio," he said. "I thought 'OK, I guess they already have somebody else in mind,' because they didn't have any information on hand and there is no way even a small percentage of voters know who I am."
Instead, fellow coaches provided the bio for Langdon.
"That's what makes it even more flattering," Langdon said. "To be selected based off the words that my peers wrote about me, that's very nice."
This fall, Marcus dropped just three matches, including a pair against Plano West.
The Wolves handed the Marauders their only regular season loss before topping Marcus in the finals of the District 8-5A Tournament. At regionals, Marcus came up short in the semifinals against El Paso Coronado.
Other Coach of the Year winners include Midland Alamo Junior High's Lee Ann Wilkins (junior high), Wink's Wendy Ratliff (A), Brock's Brent Beesley (2A), Snyder's Crystal Blazek (3A) and Ennis' Keith Howard (4A).
