Mesquite ISD sending three teams to girls soccer playoffs

Published: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 1:17 PM CDT
As the girls soccer playoffs get started this week, the Mesquite ISD will be represented by three teams, as Poteet, North Mesquite and Horn have earned the right to extend their seasons.

The Jaguars were the last team to punch their ticket, needing a victory in the regular season finale over Mesquite on Tuesday.

Horn's 3-0 victory under those pressure-filled stakes is something they envisioned weeks ago when they were trying to climb back into the postseason chase.

"Even with the other things that have happened, these girls have stayed positive and they believe in one another," Horn interim head coach Brooke Collier said with two weeks left in the regular season. "They still expect to win and when the playoffs come around, they expect to still be playing."

While the Jaguars will be playing the 9-5A champion in the bi-district round, the Stallions will face 9-5A runner-up A&M Consolidated on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Waco.

Since a 4-1 loss to Horn halfway through the 11-5A season, North Mesquite has caught fire with a four-game winning streak, including victories over Longview and Tyler Lee, the top two teams in the district.

Poteet has known it was headed to the playoffs for nearly three weeks and even prior to last Friday's regular season finale, was assured of the district championship and the top seed.

Despite the Pirates not necessarily needing victories to secure their postseason spot, they still closed strong in an effort to build momentum.

Poteet has a first-round bye and will face the winner of the Thomas Jefferson/Wylie East game in the area finals on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

"We still have room to get better, which is a good thing," Poteet head coach Kelly Thomas said. "The big thing right now is possession of the ball and not turning the ball over which we have done a much better job of lately. And then we need to convert our chances. We didn't do a good job early on in taking advantage of our opportunities. We have done better and we need to continue doing that, building momentum and carrying that over into the playoffs."
