Stallions, Jaguars hope to recapture success in boys soccer playoffs

Last season was a banner year for the Mesquite ISD teams in the boys soccer playoffs.
North Mesquite made history by making it to the Class 5A Region II tournament for the first time in recent memory.
Horn was on a good run of its own, advancing three rounds deep before getting knocked off by the Stallions in the regional quarterfinals.
North Mesquite won the 11-5A championship last season, but despite closing the year with back-to-back victories, fell one point short of defending that title.
Still, as the No. 2 seed, the Stallions have every reason to feel optimistic about the weeks ahead. North Mesquite will play the third seed from 12-5A next Monday or Tuesday in the bi-district round.
"The main thing I want is for us to get better every game. It doesn't matter if it is non-district, tournament, or district, I want to see us improve. We're going to approach the next week like that and then hopefully be ready when the playoffs start," North Mesquite head coach Morris Thompson said. "These guys got a taste of winning in the playoffs last year and they don't want to settle for anything less this year."
Horn had a rough stretch in the middle of the district season during which it dropped three of four games, but it appears to be back on track at the right time.
The Jaguars won their final two contests, including toppling district champion Longview on Friday.
Horn will have to channel that same level of play next week when it faces the 12-5A champion in the opening round.
