McKinney North tennis player Jordan Hart struck gold at the UIL State Tennis Tournament on Tuesday by defeating Austin Mayo of Austin Lake Travis (5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1) in the Class 4A Boys Singles championship match.
Hart's state title run began Monday with back-and-forth wins over Dillon Launius of Austin Vandegrift (6-0, 1-6, 6-3) in the quarterfinals and Will Adkisson of North Richland Hills Birdville (6-4, 7-6, (8-6)) in the semifinals.
From there, Hart advanced to a rematch of sorts against Mayo in the finals. Last year, Mayo was part of a doubles pairing that defeated Hart and teammate Matt Mattei in the state quarterfinals – a loss the Bulldogs’ ace avenged this time around to claim the first tennis title in school history.
Boyd ousted in the quarterfinals
McKinney Boyd's two representatives at the state tournament, Mackenna Maddox and Parker McGuiness, were each eliminated in the quarterfinals. In his second consecutive trip to state, McGuiness lost to Sanjay Goswami of Plano West (7-6, (7-5), 6-4) in the first round; while Maddox fell to Jarret Fisher of New Braunfels (6-2, 6-1).
