Cross country: The Colony competes at regionals
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, jthomas@acnpapers.com
The state's top-ranked cross country teams continued their assault of Texas competition during the weekend as the Dragons and Lady Dragons swept the first-place titles Saturday at the UIL Class 5A Region I Meet at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.
Both squads -- ranked first and 13th in the nation, respectively -- will take aim at state titles Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Additionally, Carroll's Joe Sansone (14:47.30) and Shelby Chapin (11:12.50) won gold medals individually for the Dragons and Lady Dragons, respectively.
After being a bit disappointed with a second-place finish last Saturday at the District 8-5A Meet in Denton, Marcus' Katie Canavin (11:17.90) claimed silver ahead of Carroll's Courtney Krieghauser (bronze, 11:19.10) and Flower Mound's Safiya Belbina in fourth (11:20.90). Belbina previously won gold at district.
The Lady Jaguars, however, edged out Marcus in the team standings as a result of solid pack running that included the 20th, 22nd, 23rd and 30th positions. That wasn't near enough to keep pace with the Lady Dragons with seven in the top 21, including five in the top 11.
The top-three teams and top-10 individuals advance to state. Hebron's Megan Montgomery qualified individually in 10th (11:34.80).
District 8-5A was well-represented on the boys side as well, with Marcus (167), Flower Mound (179) and Hebron (186) placing fourth through sixth. However, El Paso Eastwood (119) and Amarillo Tascosa (161) slipped in at second and third to advance to state alongside the Dragons.
The Hawks weren't completely shutout from an appearance in Austin, however, as Kevyn Hoyos (14:56.40) and Robert Domanic (15:02.30) claimed silver and bronze medals, respectively.
"I thought we ran pretty well," said Jason Grennier, Hebron coach. "Kevyn and Rob did a great job, and James ran well also. We gave ourselves a good chance, we just came up short against some good competition."
Logan Hendrix paced the Marauders in 21st (15:47.30), while Zachariah Hamstra recorded the top score for the Jaguars in 29th (16:09.70).
Hoyos and Domanic will be returning to state for the second consecutive season. Last year, Hoyos finished fourth, while Domanic crossed the line in 14th.
In the Class 4A Region I Meet, The Colony crossed the line eighth in girls (217) and 12th in boys (342). Canyon (56) won the regional title in girls, while El Paso Jefferson (73) won the boys.
Newman Smith, meanwhile, was competing Saturday at the Class 4A Region II Meet at Vandergriff Park in Arlington.
Daniel Debes narrowly missed representing the Trojans at the state meet, coming up just short of qualifying by placing 12th (16:02.00), while Smith's Garrett McCarthy placed 134th (18:05.80).
