Football: Cougars close with win

Published: Wednesday, November 9, 2011 6:11 PM CST
Though they will not be headed to the UIL Class 4A playoffs, The Colony's football team closed the 2011 campaign on a positive note Friday as the Cougars earned a convincing win against Denton, 35-14.

"We played very well," said Rudy Rangel, The Colony coach. "We had one last opportunity to make some improvements and get better, and the team was able to do that. I was proud of our seniors as a whole, but our younger players really stepped up and showed their character."

Rangel was especially pleased with The Colony's effort as the squad was coming off a bye week.

Senior quarterback Garrett Simpson closed his career on a positive note, completing 16-of-27 attempts for 275 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Simpson also ran for a season-high 108 yards on 15 carries. Simpson's top target was Gerald Thomas, who hauled in five receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns in addition to rushing for 25 yards and a score. Thomas caught a 10-yard slant and turned it into an 87-yard touchdown reception to open the contest and put the Cougars in front, 7-0, before later adding scoring receptions of 33 and 35 yards.

"Garrett played very well," Rangel said. "He's been a little banged up this season and it's too bad he wasn't able to run like that all season.

"Gerald was just Gerald. He did a great job and was able to make a lot of plays. He broke a couple of plays with his legs and caught a long touchdown on a fade."

Rangel said the offensive line played well and didn't allow any pressures or sacks.

The Cougars played well defensively, limiting the Broncos to 231 yards, including just four rushing yards.

"With the exception of the game against [Wichita Falls] Rider, our defense has played well," Rangel said. "It's been a very good defensive season for us and was fun to watch the development."

While the Cougars are pleased to finish with a win, they would still like to be competing in the playoffs.

"It's kind of bittersweet," Rangel said. "We want to be practicing and preparing for a game right now. But I was pleased with how we finished and hopefully it will give us some good momentum heading into the offseason."
