Churches seek money for Habitat for Humanity project
By Chris Roark, Croark@starlocalnews.com
Four Flower Mound religious congregations are teaming up to help raise money for a Habitat for Humanity project in Lewisville.
Kol Ami, the Jewish Synagogue in Flower Mound, as well as the Islamic Association of Flower Mound, Grace Community Assembly of God and Creekwood Christian Church will be constructing a home from the ground up in Lewisville this fall.
Laurie Appelbaum of Kol Ami said this is the first time in Flower Mound that there has been a Habitat for Humanity project in which organizations from different faiths have joined forces to make it happen.
Volunteers, with the help of professional homebuilders, will begin constructing the house in September with the hopes of the selected family moving in before Christmas.
“So far, it’s been amazing,” Appelbaum said. “This project has allowed us to learn about different faiths.”
To qualify for the new home, the future homeowner must meet certain criteria. He or she must: be a U.S. citizen, have lived in Denton County for at least one year, be a first-time homeowner, be employed, pass a criminal background check, have satisfactory credit, currently live in substandard housing, and invest 300-400 hours of sweat equity, meaning he or she must help build this house plus participate in other Habitat for Humanity projects. Also, their debt must not be more than 40 percent of their income.
Appelbaum said the four organizations are hoping to raise $75,000 for the project through various fundraisers.
On the weekend of May 19, there will be a “Junk in your Trunk” garage sale at Creekwood Christian Church, 2660 Forest Vista Drive. On June 16, there will be a 5K run at Creekwood Church.
There will also be a cookbook sale at the garage sale featuring recipes submitted by volunteers.
Area restaurants have been participating by donating proceeds they make from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays to the cause.
Members of the organizations will also conduct private fundraising.
