Craig James holds campaign rally in Celina
Former Celina EDC member running for U.S. Senate

Candidate for the U.S. Senate and Celina resident Craig James held a campaign rally in Celina on April 23.
Members of Celina Boy Scout Troop 296 presented the colors and Pastor Cliff Lester of Celina Bethel Baptist Church lead the audience in singing the National Anthem. State Representative Jodie Laubenberg introduced James.
“I had what I thought was a calling to do this,” James said in his opening remarks. “I have never had anything so boldly placed on my heart as to do this.”
If he is elected he said he wants to get rid of the Department of Education. He said we expect every boy and girl to want to go to college, but life skills development should be provided for high school students.
He wants to get free trade agreements with other countries and he wants to eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency.
“We have to get rid of Obama care and Dodd-Frank is a financial hindrance in our country,” he said.
James referred to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act signed into law in July, 2010. The act is meant to improve accountability and transparency in the financial system.
James announced his candidacy late last year in Celina at lifelong Celina resident Punk Carter's ranch. He was a member of the Celina Economic Development Corporation for seven years.
He went to high school in Houston and was a running back for Southern Methodist University in the early 1980s. He also played five seasons with the New England Patriots. He was a sports broadcaster for ESPN and is also an author. His book is titled “Game Day”, about his college football experience.
Last year he formed Texans for a Better America, a conservative nonprofit organization.
He said he is against amnesty for aliens who are in the country illegally. He favors strong border protection.
The three leading Republican contenders for the Senate seat being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchinson are former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert.
The request to fund his campaign was also part of the message.
“I can speak to hundreds everyday one-on-one, but I need television spots. I believe now I am uniquely qualified to ask for your vote,” he said.
He added that Celina is a role model for the entire United States.
“My goal in life is not to be U.S. Senator, but to make a difference,: James said. “I don't want this job if I've got to apologize for my faith,” he added.
