People of all ages are expected to join together April 14 for McKinney's participation in the fourth annual Texas Trash-Off.
Teams will check in at 8:30 a.m. McKinney residents who live on the west side of U.S. Highway 75 will check in at Fire Station #5, located at 6600 W. Virginia Parkway. Residents who live on the east side of U.S. 75 will check in at Old Settler's Park, located at 1201 E. Louisiana Street.
At each check-in location, teams will turn in liability forms that may be downloaded from the city's website. They will receive shirts, gloves and trash tongs, and be assigned a location to clean up.
Annita McCormick, city stormwater specialist, has identified most of the locations where trash is to be picked up. She said the locations are determined by people who call in to report a site where a cleanup is needed, or because she or other city employees have located such sites.
Data collected from the cleanup is sent to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to ensure that McKinney continues to have a stormwater permit.
T
eams are assigned to specific areas and are sent out at about 9 a.m. to pick up litter for about two hours, after which they head to Old Settler's Park for a final count of full bags. During lunch, to be served at 11:30 a.m., teams are recognized and several awards are presented, including ones for most trash collected, most items found and most volunteers recruited.
The Texas Trash-Off is the single largest one-day cleanup event in the state, with hundreds of cities throughout the state participating. It serves as Texas' signature event for the Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program which is held annually from March 1 through May 31.
"The Texas Trash-Off offers a unique opportunity for McKinney residents to clean up McKinney by volunteering to pick up litter along roadways and creeks within the city," said Anna Clark, city spokesperson. "Civic groups, schools, businesses, homeowners associations, faith-based organizations and individuals are encouraged to take part in this community event."
Students who participate will receive credit for community service hours, and Scouts will receive patches.
Volunteer teams can pre-register for the event until April 13 to be assured Trash-Off T-shirts. On-site registration will be available from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. the day of the event.
