Juried Arts Show winners named

Choosing the three top winners and five honorable mentions at the first annual Juried Arts Show at the McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC) last week was no easy task.
Seventy artists entered 100 works of art for the event. A panel of seven judges then juried those works and boiled it down to 50 for Michael Mentler, a highly respected founder and director of the Society of Figurative Arts in Dallas, to decide the winners.
He chose a work by Shari Hornish as first prize, one by Cheryl Wolfe as second prize, and one by Sona Knox as third prize.
Hornish's winning work, "Baby Blues," was an oil canvas showing a family of blue jays in underbrush, with sunlight showing through.
Wolfe's second-prize work, "The Golden West," shows a rich, glowing Texas landscape on canvas.
Knox's third prize work, "Pieces of McKinney," is an assemblage of raku pottery she created and objects found in a drawer from Smith's Drugs in McKinney that had been covered with collage and paint.
Artists who received honorable mention certificates were Marian Hirsch, Geri McKleskey, Guy Giersch, Don Fogg and Linda Bourgault. The awards were presented by Annie Royer, director of the Arts and Music Guild.
Ty Lake, MPAC director, said the theme for the Juried Arts Show was, in keeping with the city's slogan, Unique by Nature.
"Mr. Mentler was given the task of choosing three works of art that addressed the theme of the show and were the finest examples of artistry and professionalism," Lake said. "These works will grace the walls of the McKinney Performing Arts Center for years to come."
Lake said that when she first accepted the position of MPAC director last year, Don Day encouraged her to get high quality art on the walls of the former Collin County Courthouse.
Don and Linda got the ball rolling by donating works of art themselves.
The three top winning works will continue to grace the walls, and several works will be on sale for the next several weeks at MPAC. The public is invited to come and view the art between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.
"Unique by Nature brings together private contributors, a city landmark known as MPAC and the volunteers of the Arts and Music Guild to create a legacy of art in McKinney," Lake said.
