Sunnyvale girls track team captures district title

Published: Friday, April 27, 2012 9:52 PM CDT
The Sunnyvale girls track and field team has had a stellar season, finishing in the top three in every meet they competed in.

But the Raiders knew that prior success meant nothing if they could not perform when it mattered most at the 13-2A meet.

Sunnyvale met the challenge head on, capturing the district championship last week and sending several athletes on to the regional competition in Stephenville this week.

Andi Morgan led the charge, qualifying for regionals in four different individual events and one relay.

Morgan won both the 100 and 300 hurdles, while taking third in the high jump and long jump.

She was also part of the 1,600 relay team that claimed first place at the district meet.

Morgan was joined on the 1,600 relay by Nadien Albanna, Gabby Allen and Delanee Clark.

Albanna, a freshman, is also headed to the regional meet in the 300 hurdles, while Allen, also a freshman, was a regional qualifier in the 400 meters. Clark, a junior, qualified in both the 400 meters and the discus.

Jenna McLaughlin claimed the district championship in the 800 meters and was second in the 1,600.

The Raiders had a pair of qualifiers in the shot put, as both Natasch'a Gray and Dominique Roquemore finished in the top three.

Among the other regional qualifiers were Grace Goodhart in the high jump and Neena Johnson, Taryn Tutle and Taylor Wilson in the pole vault.

Baseball team wraps up district title

The Sunnyvale baseball team wrapped up a perfect district season on Friday with an 11-1 victory over Palmer.

The Raiders (20-4 overall) finish the 13-2A season with a 10-0 record as they wrapped up the district championship.

Jake Wilcox got the win on the mound against Palmer, allowing just a run on two hits.

He got plenty of support from the offense. Devin DeLeon had a triple and Will Moss, Zach Metzger and Brock Taylor had doubles to lead a 12-hit attack.

Sunnyvale will play a warm-up game against Carrollton Ranchview on Friday at 5 p.m.
