Sunnyvale's Gray captures 13-2A most valuable player

For the second consecutive season, the Sunnyvale girls basketball team completed an undefeated run to the district championship.

And naturally, the 13-2A all-district team was covered with Raider representatives.

Sunnyvale had nine players named to either the first or second team and claimed five superlative awards, including coach of the year Howard York, whose teams have now won seven consecutive district championships dating back to his time at West Mesquite.

Natasch'a Gray was named the 13-2A most valuable player. The senior post provided scoring punch down low while also helping the Raiders control the boards as the team's leading rebounder.

"We have some girls who can shoot the ball, but she (Gray) is really the one that gives us that presence inside," York said. "She gives us that balance that we need and she is a great leader."

Gray had plenty of help in leading Sunnyvale back to the playoffs.

Andi Morgan was named defensive player of the year, Delanee Clark was tabbed co-sixth man of the year and Caila Sims was honored as newcomer of the year.

In addition to those players, Grace Goodhart and Sheridan Lewis were named to the 13-2A first team, while Abby Duck, Hadeel Radaydeh and Olivia Williams were second-team honorees.

While the loss of Gray will hurt, the good news for Sunnyvale's future is that Radaydeh is the only other senior, meaning seven of the nine players named to the all-district team will be back in the mix to make another run next season.

"We are still building, but we have high expectations," York said. "We feel like we should be a team that makes the playoffs, competes for district championships and can make some noise in the playoffs every year."

While Sunnyvale cornered most of the major honors, Dallas Life, the district runner-up, took home the rest. Chelsea Adams won offensive player of the year, Diamond Williams was co-sixth man of the year and Kristen Fellows was named freshman of the year.
