Sunnyvale girls complete undefeated district title run

Published: Thursday, February 9, 2012 10:01 PM CST
It seems like an eternity ago that the Sunnyvale girls basketball team had a record hovering around .500.

The Raiders put an exclamation point on a dominant run through 13-2A play as it posted two more blowout victories to cap an undefeated run to the district championship.

This is the second consecutive district crown for Sunnyvale, which receives a first-round bye in the postseason and will open the playoffs next week at a time and place to be determined.

The Raiders, who are 20-8 overall after their 12-0 mark in 13-2A, were barely challenged during district play, with only one game being decided by single digits.

The past week followed that same theme.

Sunnyvale put the finishing touches on its perfect run on Tuesday with a 59-29 victory over Palmer.

The Raiders took control with their defense from the start, allowing only four points in each of the first two quarters, allowing them to race to a 36-4 halftime lead.

The huge advantage allowed Sunnyvale to use an assortment of players, and 10 different Raiders scored in the game.

Abby Duck scored 13 points to pace the offense, with Sheridan Lewis and Natashcha Gray adding 10 and eight points, respectively.

Sunnyvale had been coming off one of its most lopsided games of the season last Friday in a 62-6 win over Peak Prep.

The Raiders wasted little time in opening a double-digit lead and then used a 19-1 run in the second quarter to take a 37-6 advantage.

Sunnyvale smothered Peak Prep in the second half, as it did not allow a point in either the second or third quarters, outscoring their opponents 25-0 to close out the win.

Lewis scored 15 points, Olivia Williams added eight and Delaney Clark and Duck chipped in with seven each for the Raiders, who once again had a balanced scoring effort.

Sunnyvale will have more than a week before its next official game, but it can elect to play a warm-up game later this week.

Sunnyvale boys get back on track

It was a good week for the Sunnyvale boys basketball team, as they picked up a pair of victories to improve to 19-5 overall, and more importantly, 7-2 in 13-2A play.

The Raiders got a battle on Tuesday, but were able to hold off Palmer for a 52-46 victory.

Sunnyvale started strong with a 13-6 run, but Palmer answered and closed to within 20-18 at halftime.

The Raiders reestablished control in the third quarter, as a 17-9 spurt pushed the lead back to 10 going to the fourth quarter.

Palmer made a surge during the final eight minutes, but Sunnyvale was able to do enough to preserve the win.

Bobby Luka shouldered the scoring load for the Raiders with 20 points. Stephen Kirven added eight points and Josh Quinn chipped in with six.

Sunnyvale had a much easier time last Friday with a 62-36 victory over Peak Prep.

The outcome was essentially decided in the first half, as the Raiders opened an eight-point lead after one quarter and used a 20-7 run to push the advantage to 34-13 at halftime.

Luka once again had a big game with 24 points, with Ryan Cottingame scoring eight and Daniel Mulligan and Quinn each adding six.

Sunnyvale will look to close the regular season strong and head into the playoffs with momentum as they play at Life School Red Oak on Friday and the host Irving North Hills on Tuesday.
