Sunnyvale girls continue to roll, boys drop district game
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@acnpapers.com
The Sunnyvale girls and boys basketball teams shared a common goal coming into the season as each set out to defend their respective district championships.
The Raider girls took another step toward doing that on Tuesday with a dominant victory over Life School Red Oak.
The boys, however, slipped off the pace, as they fell to 3-2 with a narrow loss to Life School Red Oak.
The Raiders opened a 12-point lead after one quarter and then used a 19-0 run in the second to take a 33-2 lead at halftime.
Sunnyvale emptied the bench in the second half, but maintained the defensive pressure as they closed out the 45-point win.
Abby Duck led a balanced scoring effort with 12 points. Sheridan Lewis scored eight points and Delanee Clark added seven.
The Raiders had gotten 15 points from Lewis and 11 from Olivia Williams in a 56-24 win over Palmer on Friday.
Sunnyvale once again jumped on its opponent early, taking a quick 10-point lead. The Raiders poured it on in the second quarter, as a 15-3 spurt gave them a 32-10 advantage at halftime.
Sunnyvale ended any hopes of a Palmer comeback in the third quarter, as a 12-4 run put the game away.
The Raiders will try to stay perfect in district play on Friday when they play on the road at Irving North Hills.
The Sunnyvale boys dropped a 27-23 decision to Life School Red Oak on Tuesday in a game in which offense was difficult to find.
Neither team scored in double figures in any of the four quarters.
The Raiders were down 8-4 after one quarter, but chipped away during the next two periods to draw to within 20-19 going to the fourth.
Sunnyvale's offense once again struggled, though, in the fourth, as they managed only four points as they slipped to 3-2 in district play.
Thomas Wendt led the Raiders with 10 points, with Bobby Luka adding six.
Sunnyvale, which is 15-5 overall, had been coming off a 45-33 win over Palmer on Friday.
Led by 14 points from Luka and seven each from Danny Thomas and Wendt, the Raiders used a 13-5 spurt in the second quarter to take a commanding 26-13 lead at halftime.
The second half was evenly-played, but Sunnyvale prevented Palmer from making a serious charge.
The Raiders will try to get back on the winning track on Friday when they play at Irving North Hills.
