Sunnyvale boys capture title at Leonard Tournament
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@acnpapers.com
The Sunnyvale boys basketball team spent their Christmas break collecting a new trophy for the case.
The Raiders posted a 4-0 record last week to claim the championship at the 51st Annual Leonard Tournament.
Sunnyvale, who defeated Farmersville, 57-38, in the title game, was led by senior Bobby Luka, who was named the tournament's most valuable player.
With the tournament title within its grasp, the Raiders rolled over Farmersville in the finals. Sunnyvale opened the game with a 13-6 run but had the lead sliced to 27-22 at halftime.
Farmersville was still within striking distance through three quarters, trailing by only eight, but the Raiders closed the game on an 18-7 spurt to clinch the win.
Luka led a balanced scoring effort with 17 points in the finale.
Sunnyvale had gotten its biggest test in its previous game when it held on for a 37-36 win over Dodd City.
The game was tight throughout and the teams were tied at 23-23 at halftime. The Raiders turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter, allowing Dodd City only two points. That proved to be huge as Dodd City made a run in the fourth quarter but came up a point short.
Quinn had nine points, while Luka added eight for Sunnyvale.
In the quarterfinals, Quinn had a game-high 20 points and the Raiders overcame a halftime deficit with a 23-10 run in the third quarter to post a 56-48 victory against Pottsboro.
In the tournament opener, Quinn scored 15 points and Luka and Thomas added 13 and 12, respectively, in a 57-46 win against North Forney.
