Lewisville man charged with murder

Published: Friday, August 31, 2012 4:02 PM CDT
A Lewisville man is being charged with the murder of his girlfriend and the attempted murder of her son.

Nelson Flores, 24, was charged Friday morning with the murder of Norma Gomez, 39, and the attempted murder of her 16-year-old son, according to police. The incident began around 7:25 Thursday evening.

Lewisville Police were dispatched to Basswood Manor Apartments, 1020 Fox Avenue. A bystander called 911 and said there was a fight between a man and a woman and the woman was bleeding from being stabbed. Upon arrival, Lewisville police officers found Gomez and her son at the apartment complex, both with stab wounds.

Gomez's son was transported to an area hospital via Care Flight and is currently receiving medical care for his injuries. Gomez was transported via ambulance to an area hospital and was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after her arrival.

Flores was not at the apartment complex when officers arrived. He was taken to an area hospital by another adult male to receive medical care for injuries, according to police.

"Some of Flores' injuries may have been self inflicted. We don't have any information on the current medical condition for the juvenile," said Lt. Chris Butterworth. "Flores will be booked once he is released by medical staff. He will probably be brought to Lewisville for booking, but he may be sent to Denton County."

A Denton County judge set Flores' bond at $2 million.

According to police, Nelson and Gomez were boyfriend and girlfriend and had lived together for a little over a year. Police believe he was in the process of moving his belongings out of the apartment at the time of the incident. Butterworth said, in the past, patrol officers had spoken with Gomez, but he did not know what was discussed.

This is the second murder in Lewisville in 2012. The first murder occurred on March 27. Michael Stephen Stolz, 76, was charged with murdering his wife, Bernice M. Stolz, 49.

"These things [murder] are extremely random. Most of the time there's no rhyme or reason for it," Butterworth said. "Most of the time these things are completely unpredictable."
