Cowboys deal a low blow to the Lobos

UNIVERSITY PARK-- These may not have been Tom's Cowboys, but after a 41-8 victory over the Longview Lobos, even coach Landry would have been proud to watch Coppell (1-0) play tonight in the Tom Landry Classic at SMU's Ford field.
Coppell lead 21-0 after the break. Looking to close the door on Longview, the Cowboys needed one play from their offense to do the job. That play came from senior quarterback Colby Mahon as he connected with senior receiver Cameron Smith for a 90-yard touchdown.
Mahon proved to be the difference maker on the night, passing for 287 yards and 4 touchdowns on 9 of 11.
"This was something we worked for all summer," Mahon said. "It was about getting better and I'm so glad to see it pay off."
The Cowboys added two more scores for a total of 41 points, while the Lobos achieved their only touchdown on the last play of the game. Quarterback Stephon Dunn connected with running back Jamycal Hasty for a 40-yard reception as the clock expired to give the Lobos something good to look back upon.
"We try to pride ourselves on playing great defense," said Joe McBride, Coppell head coach. "We're still climbing, though. We can't be arrogant after this win."
McBride's defense was able to force three turnovers, including two forced fumbles by senior linebacker Tanner Masters, who also recorded a sack in the game.
"Defense wins games and that's exactly what they did for us tonight," Mahon said. "They just proved that they're the best defense in the state of Texas."
Coppell took the lead with their second drive of the game, as Mahon found Cameron Smith on the first of his two touchdown receptions to go along with 145-yards receiving. The pass was tipped as it crossed the goal line, but the athletic Smith was able to concentrate long enough to locate the ball and bring it in for the Cowboys' first points of the season.
The second touchdown can be credited to the defense as junior defensive back Troy Parker intercepted Longview quarterback Bivins Caraway and returned the ball to the Lobos 1-yard line. Sophomore running back Charles West quickly added seven points to the score.
McBride's team would finish the half with a 61-yard pass from Mahon to senior receiver Jacob Logan to extend the lead to 21-0. From there, the Cowboys cruised in the second half, beating the Lobos 41-8.
Longview came into the game with aspirations of a 5A state title by returning five starters on defense, including several division-one level talents. The defensive display was instead put on by the Cowboys, holding the entire Lobos offense to 216 yards, 72 of those coming on the last drive.
The chance for Coppell to go far this season will rest on the continual success of its quarterback and defense, but McBride was excited to at least have this one wrapped up.
"It's extremely satisfying because [Longview's] a great football team year after year," he said. "I didn't really know what to expect. I think we're hungry and we're just trying to earn a little respect."
The Cowboys will try to earn even more respect Friday as they host McKinney Boyd at 7:30 p.m. in Coppell.
