West ranked in TABC hoops poll
Both the Plano West boys and girls basketball teams made an appearance in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches preseason poll.
The Lady Wolves, fresh off their fourth consecutive district championship, ranked in at No. 8 in the state while their male counterparts, who finished 27-9 last season, were tabbed at No. 15 overall.
Both the Prestonwood Christian Academy and John Paul II boys and girls teams found their way onto their respective TAPPS rankings as well.
The Prestonwood boys, who captured their second TAPPS Division I Championship in three years last season, will open the season as the favorite to repeat with a No. 1 ranking in the large school boys poll, while the Lady Lions were listed at No. 9 on the girls side.
The Cardinals, last year's TAPPS Div. I runner-up, open up the 2012-13 season ranked No. 10 while the Lady Cardinals, fresh off another appearance in the state tournament, are at No. 2 behind Bishop Lynch.
Palmer earns second POTW award
Plano native and West Florida junior Chelsea Palmer was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Palmer recorded two goals -- one a game-winner -- plus two assists in two games over the past week.
Leading the charge with the opening goal just 31 seconds into a 6-0 victory over Shorter on Oct. 17, Palmer added an assist 12 minutes later and a second goal in the 20th minute.
Palmer recorded an assist in the 69th minute against West Alabama on Oct. 21, improving her total to a team-high 11 on the season.
She also leads West Florida with 33 points, a mark that ranks second in the conference.
DFW Coaches clinic
High school coaches have a chance to learn from their own.
On Jan. 23-25, Embassy Suites Outdoor World at DFW Airport will be the site of a DFW Coaches Clinic, featuring a litany of high school coaches as speakers.
Sixteen 50-minute lectures will be given by the coaches on hand, with attendees slated to enjoy a Friday night "Chalk Talk" and dinner with one of the state's top offensive or defensive minds.
There will also be a Texas Hold-Em tournament on Friday, an FCA lecture on Saturday, plus a $1,000 cash prize up for grabs after the last lecture on Sunday.
The clinic's registration fee is $70 if mailed in by Jan. 18 and $80 afterwards. To pre-register, visit the clinic website at coachesclinic.net.

Peprah signs with Cowboys
Plano East alum Charlie Peprah will continue his NFL career with his hometown team.
The former Panther agreed to a deal with the Dallas Cowboys as the team looks to bolster its secondary depth by signing the six-year veteran.
Peprah's career spans five years with the Green Bay Packers and one with the Atlanta Falcons. In Green Bay, Peprah totaled 136 tackles and seven interceptions. He also started for the Packers' Super Bowl-winning secondary in 2010.
The safety was released from Green Bay on the first day of camp this year after failing his physical.
Americans GK named GOTW
After helping lead the Allen Americans to a 2-0-0 start this season, netminder Steve Silverthorn was named the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week.
Silverthorn played in both of Allen's wins over the Arizona Sundogs, posting a goals against average of 1.44 and save percentage of .949. Silverthorn stopped all 30 shots Saturday in a season-opening 4-0 win. In Sunday's rematch, he stopped 2-of-3 shootout attempts for a 4-3 victory.
Allen returns to the ice Friday and Saturday for back-to-back road games versus the Texas Brahmas.

Morgan commits to Ole Miss
Just a few days after announcing he had de-committed from playing football for Florida State, Prestonwood Christian Academy senior Christian Morgan announced his commitment to Ole Miss.
The Lions' tight end, ranked No. 15 in the nation at his position according to Rivals, announced his decision Sunday via Twitter.
"I have decided to commit to THE University of Mississippi!" Morgan tweeted. "It has been a long journey but God has guided me the whole way. #RebelNation"
Morgan had previously committed to Florida State in June. At the time, Ole Miss was one of his four finalists. Despite announcing his commitment to play for the Seminoles then, Morgan still made the recruiting rounds, including a trip to Oxford, Miss.
The 6-foot-5, 240-pound senior currently leads the Lions in receptions (15), receiving yards (199) and receiving touchdowns (4).
Jeffcoat out for season
Plano West alum and Texas junior Jackson Jeffcoat's 2012 season has ended prematurely.
The Longhorns defensive end suffered a right pectoral muscle rupture in Saturday's 63-21 loss to Oklahoma, forcing the former West standout to undergo season-ending surgery, an untimely loss for a squad that ranks 95th in the nation against the run.
In 2012, Jeffcoat has 24 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
The injury may signal the end of his college career as well, with Jeffcoat projected by many outlets as a top 10 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Mathieu, Pugh commit
The basketball careers of Plano East seniors Marcus Mathieu and Jarvis Pugh won't end following the 2012-13 season.
Mathieu and Pugh have both announced their respective college commitments, with Mathieu pledging to McNeese State and Pugh to Santa Clara.
Entering his third year on varsity, Mathieu served as Panthers point guard last season where he led East in both scoring (10.9 points) and assists (3.8). Pugh, a reserve, averaged 3.8 points and 2.4 rebounds during his junior campaign.
Wildcats named to All-Star Game
Plano Senior alums Alex Bisacca and Matt Johnson participated in the Junior College All-Star Game at Concordia on Sept. 28-29.
The former Wildcats, now freshmen at Paris Junior College, were among the Dragons' largest All-Star Game class in 15 years. Both saw time in the game, with Bisacca striking out two in a pair of innings on the mound while Johnson supplied a number of plays on defense.
Knight honored as community leader
Plano Senior senior Julia Knight has been named a Verizon Community Leader Award.
Verizon is recognizing exceptional leaders in varsity sports with the award, which factored in Knight's work in the classroom and on the softball field. Knight is also an academic All-American and National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar.
Knight was honored Thursday at Plano's Homecoming rally. Verizon will donate $1,000 to a booster club, PTA or other non-profit in her name.
Hockey Happenings
Just one week into the season Miami sophomore forward Blake Coleman, a Plano native, already has some hardware to his name.
Coleman was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week.
Coleman, a third-round selection of the New Jersey Devils in the 2011 NHL Draft, helped the RedHawks sweep Colgate with three goals, an assist and +3 rating.
Coleman was named CCHA Rookie of the Week once as a freshman.
Elsewhere, Planoite Blake Box left the Wichita Falls Wildcats after a dispute about playing time and being uncomfortable with his enforcer role. Box was picked up by the Salmon Arm SilverBacks of the British Columbia Hockey League.

For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers will present the area's top high school football player with The Landry Award.
The honor recognizes the Metroplex's top high school player. The recipient will be chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.
