Experience matters: Forsythe touts his experience in re-election bid

Published: Thursday, March 21, 2013 5:56 PM CDT
With the city elections rapidly approaching, Mesquite City Councilman Al Forsythe is campaigning for another term.

Forsythe is the current Place No. 2 representative. He is being challenged by operations manager David Fitzgerald.

Forsythe said that his investment in the city is what made him decide to seek another term in office.

Al Forsythe
"I have got a lot invested in the city. I have two grown kids that have houses in Mesquite. I want to ensure they have a high quality of life and I want to help to promote future growth in the city. I want to create a culture here that they can enjoy. I have been active in the city for years and I want to make sure we continue to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Mesquite," Forsythe said.

Forsythe believes he is the best candidate to represent Place No. 2 because of his experience within the city.

"I have 16 years of service in dealing with policy and making decisions. I know my way around. My opponent hasn't participated in the city in any meaningful way. A few years ago he was on a board but had to give up his position after a few months when he ran for council. There is a big learning curve when you are trying to budget $97 million," Forsythe said.

Forsythe said a lot has changed within the city since he first took office in 2008, due to the economic downturn over the last several years.

"The whole time I have been on council we have struggles and not been able to increase the budget at all. Everyone else has had the same problem. Our city does a good job maintaining what we have. We have had no layoffs or major changes to city services," Forsythe said.

He added that despite the economic situation, the city has still accomplished quite a bit while he has been serving on the council. Among the accomplishments Forsythe takes pride in is the building of the airport tower, which is currently under construction, and the work done to enhance the I-635 and Town East area.

Forsythe said that one of the issues facing the council is encouraging development in the current economy. He believes the city is close to turning the corner on the poor economic conditions that have hampered development.

"I have a positive attitude that things are going to get better," he said.
